All About Springhill Nursery
In the year 1849, Peter Bohlender started a small nursery called the Bohlenders Nursery, in North Dayton, Ohio. It was a time when thousands were seeking their golden destiny in California. Peter had to leave Bavaria with his family at the age of 6. There were a very few schools at that time which were filled and Peter had hardly any chances to attend. So he went to work in a tobacco stripping house. Peter worked till he became a teenager and was employed by a nurseryman where he received his training for his life’s work. In the year 1889, Peter Bohlender shifted his nursery to Tipp City, Ohio. He renamed his nursery as “Springhill Nursery” during the World War I. The name “Springhill” was chosen from the hill located across the creek from the present day location of the garden store’s growing area.
The Springhill Nurseries was originally a wholesale garden store nursery, owning nearly all the property surrounding its present location. Over the next 40 years, Springhill slowly began to move out of wholesale and grew into mail-order. Springhill shifted the majority of its focus to mail-order in 1930. During the spring and the fall seasons the Springhill Nuesery mails its catalogs. Orders are placed from every part of the country and shipped at the proper planting time for each area of the country. It is estimated that over 25,000,000 American gardens contain Springhill grown plants.
